Remember learning about Pompeii in school? You know, the ancient Roman city destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. and frozen in time, remarkably preserved under ash?
Cincinnatians will soon be able to see what daily life was like in Pompeii before, during and after the disastrous volcano eruption when Pompeii: The Exhibition comes to Cincinnati Museum Center next month.
The touring exhibition will run Feb. 16 through July 28.
Guests will seem to travel back in time to ancient Pompeii by examining more than 150 authentic artifacts on loan from the National Archaeological Museum of Naples in Italy, including everyday objects, mosaics and even body casts of people who were buried in the ash.
Visitors will also witness the destruction of Pompeii through a dramatic 4D theatrical experience.
“We wanted to bring this historical event back to life and allow guests to relive it vividly,” John Norman, president of World Heritage Exhibitions, producer of Pompeii: The Exhibition, said in a release.
Pompeii was a coastal city in the Roman Empire near present-day Naples, Italy. On Aug. 24, 79 A.D., nearby Mount Vesuvius erupted, showering the region with ash and pumice, according to Encyclopedia Britannica. The city and its people were buried more than 20 feet deep and preserved until excavation of the site began in 1748.
“We’re honored to be entrusted with these archaeological treasures and to once again bring the world to Cincinnati, and to do so in immersive fashion as we transport guests back in time to a period of splendor and a day of timeless catastrophe,” said Elizabeth Pierce, president and CEO of Cincinnati Museum Center.
Tickets go on sale Jan. 29, but visitors can sign up for exclusive presale access through Jan. 21, with the presale period Jan. 22 to 28.
