Presented in strategic partnership with the Shanghai Museum, one of the world’s most distinguished cultural institutions renowned for its high-quality collections of ancient Chinese bronzes, ceramics, calligraphy, paintings and more, this remarkable collaboration brings together two institutions united by a shared commitment to cultural excellence and world-class visitor experiences that bridge history and innovation.

Home to more than 1.02 million artefacts spanning over 5,000 years, the Shanghai Museum has long been a beacon of cultural appreciation. In 2024, its blockbuster exhibition On Top of the Pyramid: The Civilization of Ancient Egypt, attracted a record-breaking 2.77 million visitors over 13 months, reflecting the city’s deep enthusiasm for world heritage and cross-cultural storytelling. Building on this momentum, the Shanghai Museum is the perfect stage for NEON to deliver this golden experience that illuminates the splendour of the ancient Inca civilization in a way that is as educational as it is awe-inspiring.

Marking its sixth stop in NEON’s global touring footprint, the Shanghai presentation of Machu Picchu and the Golden Empires of Peru follows acclaimed runs in Florida, USA; Paris, France; Milan, Italy; Sydney, Australia; and Tokyo, Japan, with each city witnessing the spellbinding allure of this monumental exhibition, bringing to life the myths, rituals, and artistry of the Inca Empire through breathtaking scenography and immersive storytelling. A testament to NEON’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of immersive cultural storytelling and experiential innovation, the Shanghai presentation will be the largest ever staged, with an exhibition area spanning more than 16,000 square feet, featuring 116 newly unveiled original artefacts that have never before left Peru, bringing the grand total display to over 300 magnificent relics of profound historical value which are all on loan from Lima Peru’s famed Museo Larco. Augmented by state-of-the-art virtual reality experience, evocative soundscapes, and multisensory installations, this edition promises an even deeper exploration of the mysteries of the Inca world. From the heights of the Andes to the legendary citadel of Machu Picchu, every detail has been thoughtfully designed to transport visitors across time and continents, offering a rare opportunity to encounter the golden legacy of an empire that continues to captivate the minds of visitors globally.

This collaboration also holds deep cultural significance, as 2026 marks the 100th anniversary of Museo Larco, the esteemed Peruvian museum whose world-class collection forms the foundation of Machu Picchu and the Golden Empires of Peru. The milestone also coincides with the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Peru, making the exhibition a meaningful celebration of shared cultural appreciation, history, and artistic exchange.

“We are thrilled to bring Machu Picchu and the Golden Empires of Peru to China and to partner with the world-renowned Shanghai Museum in this milestone edition,” said Mr. Ron Tan, Group CEO of NEON. “Through this partnership, we celebrate heritage with innovation, uniting the Shanghai Museum’s tradition of excellence with NEON’s immersive storytelling to create an unforgettable journey for visitors. With newly unveiled artefacts and an expanded exhibition footprint, we are confident that this edition will bring record-breaking crowds, setting a new benchmark for cultural experiences in the region and beyond.”

Shanghai Museum Director Chu Xiaobo stated: “The Shanghai Museum is honoured to collaborate with NEON to present the largest-ever Machu Picchu and the Golden Empires of Peru experience, allowing Chinese audiences to experience the Inca civilization and appreciate the magnificent art nurtured by the Andes Mountains without leaving the country. Through this collaboration, we are once again fulfilling our mission to bring world culture closer to the Chinese people, promoting mutual understanding and highlighting the enduring power of cultural heritage and innovation in cross-border exchanges.”

With its unprecedented scale, rare artefacts, and transformative use of technology, Machu Picchu and the Golden Empires of Peru in Shanghai promises to be one of the most anticipated cultural events of 2026. As NEON continues to expand its global portfolio of world-class experiences, the Group looks forward to welcoming visitors in Shanghai and beyond to embark on this awe-inspiring journey into the heart of ancient civilization where history, innovation, and imagination converge.
